Solutions to reduce unrecorded water loss
Ofwat has challenged water companies to reduce their leakage by 15% as part of PR19 methodology. A significant percentage (circa 30%) of current leakage is estimated to occur beyond the property boundary, through the supply pipe and internal plumbing, which is not owned or maintained by the Water Company.
It is assumed that many of these leaks are below the minimum detectable level of current metering options (mechanical meters and constant flow alarms), which affects the accuracy of leakage calculations and can inhibit the effective deployment of leakage field staff. Therefore, water companies are seeking innovative solutions to better quantify and reduce or eliminate the amount of unrecorded water currently passing through meters from their networks.
