During gas supply outages, customers (especially those who are vulnerable) are often supplied with 240V electrical heating and cooking appliances. 
In the rare instance of a widespread gas outage, these devices can lead to additional demand on the electricity network. This can, in turn, cause large-scale electrical power outages.
