The network is due to replace around 250 km of 8-inch diameter ductile iron pipe each year for the next four years. 
The current practice for replacing pipe is to use a variety of pneumatic saws to cut ductile iron pipe. Whilst this method is functional, it is time consuming, and large excavations are required to allow for the manoeuvring of these tools.
