UK Power Networks and Arribada Initiative CIC are developing and trialling new bird resting deterrents for overhead aerial bunched cables and lines up to 55mm in diameter. The project will design and field test mechanical deterrent concepts to provide a durable, weather resistant and easy to install alternative to cable ties, reducing customer complaints.
Challenge
Birds frequently perch on overhead lines above customer properties causing mess, complaints and reputational issues for UK Power Networks.
Existing deterrents, such as plastic spikes, cladding and cable ties have shown limitations in long-term outdoor environments, often rotating, degrading or cracking due to UV exposure, weathering and temperature changes. As a result, DNOs face recurring maintenance costs and repeated site visits.
The challenge is to create a long lasting, lightweight and weather resistant deterrent that prevents perching without increasing conductor sag, snow/ice buildup or being hard to install.
Who’s the Innovator?
Arribada Initiative CIC are a UK research and development organisation specialising in electronic design and mechanical innovation. Arribada’s extensive material design experience has awarded them contracts developing advanced acoustic reflectors for the UK government, robust marine-grade instruments for Oxford University and rugged solutions capable of surviving the Antarctic winter and extreme ultraviolet light.
What’s Next?
The project will progress through design, prototyping and two stages of field trials to validate mechanical deterrent concepts. Initial work includes CAD design, material selection and 3D printed prototypes, followed by manufacturing of each deterrent type for testing.
These trials will assess bird behaviour, durability, installation practicality and performance under snow, ice and UV exposure. Optimised designs will then be produced and tested again to evaluate long term suitability.
