Low Voltage Pole Mounted Transformer Fuse Testing from Ground Level

What’s the Problem?

Pole mounted transformers support the delivery of electricity to homes and businesses.

There is no method to test the condition of transformer fuses from ground level, to establish whether customer-side incoming and outgoing supply circuits are functional.

All authorised personnel are able to remove low voltage (LV) fuses from the ground using an approved rod; there is no suitable device that allows non-linesmen staff to test the circuit safely before replacing an LV fuse.

Non-linesmen personnel are currently able to remove the fuse and carry out relevant repairs, but are unable to replace the fuse. Therefore, there is a requirement for an authorised linesmen to attend the site to complete the job.

During storms or outage periods, this can impact restoration work and keep customers off supply for longer.

Preferred Output

Scottish & Southern Electricity Networks is seeking a solution that allows authorised non-linesman to safely replace LV fuses from ground level.

The solution should allow staff to test the incoming and outgoing LV terminals before and after fuse replacement to ensure safe restoration of the circuit.

The preferred solution should:

  • Work with existing approved rods
  • Test incoming and outgoing LV terminals from ground level
  • Confirm live/dead status before and after fuse replacement
  • Confirm supply, polarity and phase rotation
  • Identify possible backfeed
  • Provide a clear visual and/or audible result to the operator
  • Be suitable for outdoor use during storm conditions
  • Allow the task to be completed ideally by one person.
