What’s the Problem?
As the UK electricity transmission network progresses towards net zero, National Grid is delivering an unprecedented programme of network investment, with £31bn of investment planned over the next five years. This significant increase in infrastructure delivery is driving a corresponding rise in demand for specialist technical resources to support the safe construction, commissioning and operation of the transmission network.
Every intervention on the transmission network requires the expertise of Senior Authorised Persons (SAPs) to ensure work is:
- Undertaken safely
- In compliance with operational standards
- Delivered while protecting staff, the public and network integrity.
In addition, every new transmission asset requires commissioning engineers to verify that equipment is commissioned safely, reliably and in accordance with technical and operational requirements before being energised. As the volume of network investment increases, demand for these highly specialised technical experts is growing significantly, creating an urgent need to expand the capability and capacity of the workforce.
Developing and training new SAPs and commissioning engineers relies on the time and expertise of experienced engineers, whose involvement in training reduces the capacity available to deliver critical network upgrades.
Preferred Output
National Grid Electricity Transmission are seeking innovative, new technologies to improve the efficiency and throughput of their training activities. These technologies should use AI or VR to simulate site activities or enhance classroom training, reducing the reliance on experienced engineers for some areas of training.
