What is the Challenge
Gas distribution networks (GDNs) play a vital role in safely delivering energy to millions of customers, from individual households to large industrial and commercial users who rely on a dependable gas supply.
The shift towards heat electrification, low-carbon gases and distributed energy generation will create new challenges in how gas networks support and interact with customers. As the energy system moves towards net zero, GDNs will need to adapt to major change and continue meeting their customers’ diverse needs.
Desired Outcome
This challenge is aiming to extensively explore how GDNs might better support both domestic and industrial/commercial customers through the energy systems transition. The networks are actively seeking solutions to address the following key areas:
- Ways to help decarbonise multiple occupancy buildings (MOBs) with minimal disruption to residents and infrastructure
- Supporting customers in vulnerable situations to ensure that no-one is left behind in the energy systems transition
- Ensuring security of appropriate and resilient energy supply to industrial and commercial users
- Providing all customers with relevant guidance and education to empower them to make decisions regarding the energy transition and low-carbon technologies
- Technologies which support customers’ transitions to a low-carbon future, particularly for those who may not be able to electrify their energy demand.
