Assessment of Vehicle Electrolyser Technology

What’s the Problem?

A retrofittable electrolyser technology has been introduced to Northern Gas Networks (NGN) with the potential to support the decarbonisation of their fleet vehicles.

They require an organisation to conduct an independent evaluation that assesses the feasibility of using this technology in their operations.

Preferred Output

To find out if this technology is effective, NGN want a research partner to perform a complete assessment of its performance.

Any successful organisation(s) will work with the technology provider on the following key research points:

  1. Technical Feasibility
Evaluate the compatibility of the electrolyser system with selected vehicle types from their fleet (approximately five types to be selected for initial study)
  2. Operational Feasibility
Analyse the impact on vehicle performance, maintenance and refuelling logistics
Identify safety considerations and regulatory compliance requirements
  3. Economic Feasibility
Estimate capital and operational costs for electrolyser deployment across NGN’s fleet
Compare whole lifecycle costs against conventional fuel systems
  4. Environmental Impact
Quantify potential reductions in carbon emissions
Assess water consumption and sustainability implications.

Project Funding/Budget

It’s envisaged that appropriate solutions could be supported by funding either for design, development or trial with network partners. It’s anticipated that the total project budget will not exceed £150k. This will include both the research and the cost of hardware that will be provided by the technology provider.
