Work completed as part of the Gas Distribution Network’s (GDNs) replacement expenditure (repex) programme, emergency repair works and new gas connection installations, require many separate components, such as pipes and fittings, which are commonly supplied in single-use plastic packaging (SUPP).

Due to the demanding working conditions often faced by operatives, SUPP can become difficult to manage on work sites, potentially creating litter which can generate customer complaints. This problem could negatively impact local communities and wildlife within the vicinity of work sites, and as a result the gas networks are striving to ensure this problem is addressed.
